SNAP 2024

This year's convention took place at The Meadows School on January 20th, events can be found below.

10:10 AM to 12:10 PM

Certamen

Certamen, everyone's favorite Greco-Roman centric quiz-bowl competition, was played at SNAP. This year we introduced full Certamen with schools providing teams for every level which were Beginner (Latin Levels 0-1), Intermediate (2), and the questionably underprepared Advanced Group (3+, those being Miranda and Thomas). With question's ranging from translating Latin into English and then answering simple questions (something the advanced players do in class and yet still failed to do...) to Mythology, which everyone was relieved by.

Academic Testing & Sight Reading

12:30 PM to 1:45 PM

After a small lunch break, students had the opportunity to take tests. The tests include Roman Daily Life, Derivatives, and the ever loved and taken Mythology test. Running concurrently to testing was Latin Sight Reading, in which a student is given a chapter to read and has to recite it back to a moderator with the paper available unlike, say, Dramatic Interpretation. While those competing for Beginner and Intermediate received the same chapter, Latin 3 and above had a slightly different one to read and had to do everyone's least favorite thing- poetry,

1:45 PM to 2 PM

Chariot Racing

After students demonstrated their mental prowess and skill in testing and Certamen, students gathered in the Aux Gym to partake in Chariot Racing- an event aptly described by Mr. Fisher as "an event that has nothing to do with chariots, and everything to do with sheets". Student's partaking in this event gathered in teams of two with one acting as the horse and one being a rider. The rider was wrapped in a bed sheet and dragged around the gym by their horse to see who was fastest before the two positions switched on subsequent runs. A notable inclusion in the teams was Dr. Lorenzo as a horse and Chewie "Chewbacca" Noone as a rider in a dubiously blood splattered looking blanket (it probably wasn't blood...probably).

2 PM to 2:40 PM

Clay Sculpting

Running concurrently with Mosaics as our 2 Impromptu Arts options, Clay Sculpting was quickly shown to be the fan favorite with most JCLers participating with it in a way. Delegates displayed their creativity and artistry skills through replicating things ranging from food, ancient pillars atop of which sat a bull head, buff Jesus, Stonehenge, or whatever could come to their mind.
